Investigations / Legal Affairs
Assist with legal affairs and investigations related to wild horse conservation.

As a volunteer, you will conduct research, collect data, and support legal efforts to protect wild horses and burros. Your work will help ensure the protection and preservation of wild horse populations.

Community Relations and Events
Support community relations and events to raise awareness and funds.
Join our community relations and events team and support efforts to raise awareness and funds for wild horse and burro conservation. As a volunteer, you will help organize events, outreach activities, and build relationships with community members and organizations. Your work will help promote conservation efforts and ensure the protection of wild horses and burros.
Eligibility: Ideal for individuals with strong organizational, communication, and networking skills.

Habitat Stewardship
Protect and clean up habitat, monitor gates, repair fences, and more.
Join our habitat stewardship team and help protect and maintain the natural habitats of wild horses in the Virginia Range. As a habitat steward, you will engage in various activities such as protecting and cleaning up habitat, monitoring gates, repairing fences, maintaining water sources, and delivering hay to keep horses out of neighborhoods. Your efforts will ensure that wild horses can thrive in their natural environment.
Eligibility: Suitable for all ages and all fitness levels. People go out in groups of 5-25 people. Experienced stewards will accompany each group.
When does it occur: Once a week but varies according to need and weather.
What to wear: Suitable clothing for weather conditions, sturdy shoes, work gloves, sunscreen, hat, snacks & water.
Skills needed: Hiking, bending, digging, lifting.

Wild Horse Identification Specialist (Spotters & Documenters)
Learn how to identify horses and match them to records in our database.
As a wild horse identification specialist, you will play a vital role in our fertility control program by identifying and tracking wild horses in the Virginia Range. Your keen observation skills and attention to detail will help our darting teams locate and administer birth control to mares, ensuring the success of our humane management efforts.
Eligibility: Responsible and detailed person who can read a darting report and match with horses on the range.
When does it occur: Flexible schedule. Usually, all day in the field, some half days. Volunteer times coordinated with darters.
What is needed: Suitable clothing for weather conditions & terrain, sunscreen, snacks & water. Camera, tablet.
Skills needed: Photography, knowledge of horse colors and markings are very helpful.
