Roundup Report: Palomino Butte Wild Horses, Aug 2021

The Palomino Buttes Herd Management Area (HMA) is made up of 74,000 acres in Oregon. As of June 2021, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) estimates there were about 427 wild horses in the HMA. However, the BLM’s unscientifically low Appropriate Management Level (AML) for the HMA – the number of horses the agency claims that the range can sustainably support in conjunction with other animals and resource uses – is 32-64 horses.

Roundup Report: Antelope Complex, August 2021

The Antelope Complex consists of the Antelope Valley, Goshute, Spruce-Pequop, and Antelope Herd Management Areas (HMAs) and is made up of 1,183,340 acres in Nevada. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) currently estimates 6,032 wild horses, before the 2021 foals are counted. However, the BLM’s unscientifically low Appropriate Management Level (AML) for the HMA – the number of horses the agency claims that the range can sustainably support in conjunction with other animals and resource uses – is 427-789 animals.

After the Onaqui Roundup

(August 12, 2021) On August 8 and 9, the long-awaited release of Onaqui wild horses captured in a July roundup took place. As part of our ongoing collaboration with the BLM on the release of these horses, AWHC, Onaqui Catalogue Foundation and Wild Horses of America Foundation were invited to have a representative onsite to observe the return of five mare/foal pairs and four mares to the HMA. The purpose of this small release was to keep the mares and foals safe from the scuffle of the large release the following day.

Roundup Report: Conger Wild Horses, August 2021

The Conger Herd Management Area (HMA) is made up of 151,506 acres in Utah. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) currently estimates 340-355 wild horses, including the 2021 foals. However, the BLM’s unscientifically low Appropriate Management Level (AML) for the HMA – the number of horses the agency claims that the range can sustainably support in conjunction with other animals and resource uses – is 40-80 horses.

Breaking it Down: Understanding Emergency Roundups for Wild Horses and Burros

(August 10, 2021) The BLM recently announced that it will conduct “emergency” actions to round up and permanently remove more than 6,000 “drought-stricken” wild horses and burros from Western public lands. The planned action will boost the total number of animals targeted for removal this summer and fall to nearly 10,000.

Roundup Report: West Douglas Herd Area, August 2021

(August 3, 2021) The West Douglas Herd Area (HA) is in the same area as the 190,000-acre Piceance-East Douglas Herd Management Area (HMA), but the Bureau of Land Management has created the HA as an area not managed for wild horses, blaming the terrain and lack of summer range.

BLM currently estimates 450 wild horses call the HA home. However, the BLM’s unscientific Appropriate Management Level (AML) for areas designated as HAs is zero wild horses.

Roundup Report: Stinkingwater HMA, August 2021

(August 2, 2021) The Stinkingwater Herd Management Area (HMA) consists of 71,893 acres of public lands in Oregon. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) notes that during an aerial June 21, 2021 direct count survey, 449 horses were documented within and adjacent to the HMA. However, the BLM’s unscientifically low Appropriate Management Level (AML) for the HMA – the number of horses the agency claims that the “range can sustainably support in conjunction with other animals and resource uses” – is just 40 to 80 animals.
