East Pershing Complex Roundup

On December 28, 2023, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) began a wild horse helicopter roundup in the East Pershing Complex located in northwestern Nevada. The complex is composed of 3 HMAs (Augusta Mountains HMA, North Stillwater HMA, and Tobin Range HMA) and 4 HAs (Augusta Mountains HA, East Range HA, Humboldt HA, Sonoma Range HA) and contains a mixture of public and private land. It crosses three BLM districts: Winnemucca, Carson City, and Battle Mountain.

AWHC Update on the McCullough Peaks Roundup

The American public rallied against the bait trap removal of the beloved McCullough Peaks wild horses, generating over 200,000 emails to top BLM officials. In response to this pressure, the BLM reduced the number of horses it plans to capture. Additionally, the BLM's Wind River/Big Horn Basin District Office reached out to AWHC to begin a dialogue about the wild horse populations in Northwest Wyoming. We appreciate this gesture and the recognition of the strong public interest in protecting Wyoming's iconic wild horse herds. 


Roundup Report: Clan Alpine HMA, Nov 2023

On November 8, 2023, the Bureau of Land Management began a wild horse helicopter roundup on and around the Clan Alpine Herd Management Area located approximately 60 miles east of Fallon in Churchill County NV. The contractor for this operation is CD Warner Livestock who was awarded $595,060 in taxpayer funds to stampede these animals into captivity. The BLM aims to remove 1,594 wild horses from the range, in which 81 mares are to be treated with the controversial fertility control agent, Gonacon. The agency plans to release 121 stallions back onto the range after the operation.


Report: Robert's Mountain Complex, Oct 2023

Starting around October 22, 2023, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) intends to conduct a wild horse roundup in the Roberts Mountain Complex area of Eureka County, Nevada. This area is located about 20 miles northwest of Eureka, west of State Highway 278, and north of U.S. Highway 50. The Roberts Mountain Complex covers approximately 556,500 acres of both public and private lands. The designated Appropriate Management Level for wild horses in this area is between 110 and 184 – or 1 horse for every 3,000+ acres.

Semi-truck overturns, leaving seven federally protected wild horses dead

Eureka, NV (October 31. 2023): Today the American Wild Horse Campaign is renewing its call for humane management of the nation’s federally-protected wild horses and burros in the wake of yesterday’s tragic vehicle incident that claimed the lives of seven of the federally-protected animals. 


2023 Devil’s Garden Roundup Ends: 236 Wild Horses Lose Their Home

On Wednesday, October 11 th , the United States Forest Service’s (USFS) roundup and removal of the Devil’s Garden wild horses in the Modoc National Forest (MNF) ended – the seventh in eight years. Although the USFS was targeting 500 horses on the Devil’s Garden Wild Horse Territory (Territory), this year the agency fell far short and removed less than half of its original goal via helicopter and bait trapping.
