Learn more about “Warm Springs HMA (Oregon)”
The Warm Springs Herd Management Area (HMA) in Oregon spans approximately 475,000 acres and is home to a unique population of wild horses and burros. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), this area has faced challenges related to overpopulation and management practices. The BLM has set an Appropriate Management Level (AML) of 178 horses and 24 burros to ensure the health of the rangeland. Recent proposals have included returning a limited number of rounded-up horses back to the HMA while implementing humane fertility control methods. Advocacy groups, including the American Wild Horse Campaign, actively work to protect these animals and promote sustainable management practices that respect their natural habitat.
