Learn more about “Muddy Creek HMA (Utah)”
The Muddy Creek Herd Management Area (HMA) is located in Emery County, Utah, approximately 20 miles south of Ferron, encompassing around 283,400 acres of public and state lands. This area is crucial for the management of wild horse populations, where the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has set an Appropriate Management Level (AML) of 75-125 horses. Due to ongoing drought conditions and overpopulation, the BLM has conducted roundups to maintain this balance, with recent operations removing approximately 149 horses. The Muddy Creek HMA offers opportunities for public observation of these gather operations, allowing visitors to witness the management efforts firsthand while promoting awareness of wild horse conservation.
