Learn more about “Little Book Cliffs HMA”
The Little Book Cliffs Herd Management Area (HMA) in Colorado spans over 36,000 acres and is home to approximately 211 wild horses. This unique area is dedicated primarily to wild horse management, free from livestock competition. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has proposed controversial roundups to reduce the population to an appropriate management level (AML) of 90-150 horses, which many advocates, including the American Wild Horse Conservation (AWHC), argue is too low. AWHC promotes humane management strategies, such as expanding fertility control programs, to maintain a genetically viable herd while preserving the natural habitat. The Little Book Cliffs HMA represents a critical focus for wild horse advocacy efforts in Colorado.
