Learn more about Lava Beds HMA (Nevada)

The Lava Beds Herd Management Area (HMA) in Nevada is part of the Blue Wing Complex, encompassing approximately 2,283,300 acres of diverse terrain. This area is home to wild horses and burros, with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) setting Appropriate Management Levels (AMLs) for the complex at 333 to 553 wild horses and 55 to 90 wild burros. The region features a mix of public and private lands, where wild horses coexist with various wildlife species. However, the horses often face challenges such as competition for resources with livestock. The American Wild Horse Campaign advocates for the humane management of these herds, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices that protect their natural habitat and ensure their survival for future generations.
