Learn more about Calico Mountains Complex (Nevada)

The Calico Mountains Complex in Nevada is a stunning Herd Management Area (HMA) that spans approximately 160,831 acres, home to hundreds of wild horses. Nestled near the Black Rock Desert, this area is known for its breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife, including big horned sheep and coyotes. However, the wild horses here face challenges, particularly competition for resources with privately-owned cattle. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has set the Appropriate Management Level (AML) for this complex at 200-333 horses. Notably, a controversial roundup in 2009-2010 resulted in the capture of 1,922 horses, raising concerns about the welfare of the animals involved. The American Wild Horse Conservation advocates for the protection and humane management of these iconic animals.
