The Blue Wing Herd Management Area (HMA)

The Blue Wing Herd Management Area (HMA) offers a unique opportunity to observe wild burros and horses in their natural habitat. Spanning approximately 17,913 acres of unfenced public lands, the area features north-south trending mountains separated by broad valleys. Elevations range from 4,000 feet along the valley floor to 6,592 feet on Black Mountain. The climate is characterized by warm, dry days, cool nights, and low yearly precipitation, ranging from 4 to 6 inches at lower elevations to about 8 inches at higher elevations.

How to Get There

The Blue Wing HMA is located in western Pershing County, approximately 65 miles northeast of Reno, Nevada. This makes it accessible for a day trip or a weekend adventure to explore the beauty of Nevada's wild landscapes.

About the Burros

The HMA is home to an estimated 36 burros, primarily exhibiting a gray color pattern, although pinto burros can also be found. In addition to burros, the area is also inhabited by wild horses, offering a diverse wildlife viewing experience.
