Meet Cathy Cottrill, a passionate volunteer dedicated to the protection of Virginia Range horses. Cathy has been an active member of the Wild Horse Preservation League's Board of Directors, a certified darter for the American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign), and a responder for LRTC’s Technical Large Animal Rescue team. Her commitment to these majestic creatures is truly inspiring.

Getting Involved with Wild Horses

Cathy's journey with wild horses began unexpectedly when the BLM conducted a roundup of so-called nuisance horses in her neighborhood. Having recently moved to Nevada, she quickly became aware of the issues surrounding wild horses and has been an advocate ever since.

Volunteering: A Passion and a Purpose

For Cathy, the most rewarding aspect of volunteering is knowing she is making a tangible difference in the lives of wild horses. She also values the opportunity to educate others about the importance of keeping these horses wild, free, and safe.

The Special Bond with Wild Horses

Wild horses hold a special place in Cathy's heart due to their historical significance and the lessons they impart. They represent freedom and resilience, qualities she deeply admires.

A Diverse Career and a Love for Animals

Before retiring, Cathy and her husband John, who also volunteers, owned and operated an 18-wheel truck, transporting specialty vehicles. She also spent 17 years in the veterinary field. Now retired, Cathy dedicates more time to volunteering than she did in her paid career.

Memorable Moments on the Range

One of Cathy's cherished memories involves reuniting a lost foal with its mother in Iron Mountain. The rescue team, including Willis Lamm and Tracy Wilson, played a crucial role in this heartwarming reunion.

Wildlife on the Nevada Range

Cathy has encountered a variety of animals on the Nevada range, including bighorn sheep, mule deer, owls, rabbits, coyotes, scorpions, antelope, and donkeys.

Favorite Animals and Personal Preferences

Aside from horses, Cathy has a fondness for both cats and dogs, having grown up with them. Her theme song for the range would be “The Horse Nobody Could Ride,” reflecting her connection with wild mustangs.

Challenges in Volunteering

One of the toughest horses for Cathy to dart was Lora from Steener's band, who seemed to anticipate Cathy's every move. Similarly, horses in Shaggy’s band were adept at avoiding capture.

Personal Tastes

When it comes to pizza, Cathy prefers pepperoni and mushrooms over pineapple, though she acknowledges others' tastes.

Cathy finds immense joy in her volunteer work, knowing that her efforts contribute to the safety and freedom of wild horses. The camaraderie among volunteers fosters a sense of family, united by a common goal.
