Roundup Report: Surprise Complex, October 2021

Surprise Complex Roundup: October 2021 InsightsSurprise Complex Roundup: October 2021 Insights

The Surprise Complex, encompassing the Massacre Lakes, Bitner, Nut Mountain, Wall Canyon, High Rock, and Fox Hog Herd Management Areas (HMAs), spans nearly 400,000 acres in Nevada. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) estimates that approximately 1,300 to 1,700 horses reside in the Complex. However, the BLM's Appropriate Management Level (AML) for the Complex is set at an unscientifically low 283-496 wild horses and zero burros.

Despite plans to round up about 1,220 horses and permanently remove 1,050 wild horses from the Complex, the BLM continues to authorize thousands of cows to graze in overlapping allotments.

It is time for the BLM to manage wild horse habitat for the wild horses.

This roundup will cost taxpayers at least $341,600 to capture these 1,220 beloved horses from the Complex. Of these, only approximately 170 are planned for return, leading to a lifetime cost of approximately $61 million to house the remaining 1,050 horses in government holding corrals. The contractor for this roundup is Shayne Sampson.

Additionally, taxpayers bear the cost of federally-subsidized livestock grazing on public lands. The federal grazing fee remains at its historic low of $1.35 per animal per month, a steep discount due to taxpayer subsidies. Estimates suggest the overall cost to taxpayers for the federal grazing program could be as much as $500 million annually.

We will update this report as the operation progresses.
