150,000 Petition Signatures to be Delivered at Meeting Tonight

(Gardnerville, NV) July 12, 2018 . . . A group of prominent wild horse photographers and advocates will deliver 150,000 petition signatures at a public meeting tonight calling for freedom for the Fish Springs wild horses, a world-famous herd that lives on public lands near Gardnerville. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), invited to attend the meeting, is planning to remove more than half of the Fish Springs horse population beginning this month.

  • What: Public Meeting on the Future of Fish Springs Wild Horses
  • Photo Op: Prominent community members deliver 150,000 petition signatures in support of freedom for the Fish Springs wild horses
  • Where: Fish Springs Volunteer Fire Department (Part of East Fork FPD) 2249 Fish Springs Rd., Gardnerville, NV
  • When: Thursday, July 12, 2018, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

John T. Humphries, Mary Cioffi, and Nancy Florence, three prominent members of the business community whose photographs of the Fish Springs horses have given the herd an international following, will deliver the petition signatures at the meeting tonight.

The petition states:

“The Fish Springs wild horses are managed through a community partnership that utilizes the PZP birth control vaccine to humanely reduce population growth in the herd. It makes no sense to round up and remove horses that are being successfully managed at no cost to taxpayers... especially given that the round-up, removal, and storage of 45 horses in holding pens could cost taxpayers $1 million or more! Worse, given the BLM's push for lethal management solutions, every horse removed from the range will be in grave danger of being killed or slaughtered."

The iconic Fish Springs horses, embraced by the local community and Bently Ranch, which has permits to graze on the public lands where the horses live, supports the continued protection of the herd.

The petition was started by the American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign), the nation’s largest wild horse advocacy organization. In 20xx, AWHC brokered a deal between the community and the BLM to leave the horses on the range and manage them humanely with birth control.

The American Wild Horse Conservation is a national wild horse advocacy organization whose grassroots mission is endorsed by a coalition of more than 60 horse advocacy, public interest, and conservation organizations. AWHC is dedicated to preserving the American wild horse in viable, free-roaming herds for generations to come, as part of our national heritage.
