Little Fish Lake Roundup: February 8, 2015
On February 8, 2015, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) initiated a roundup of approximately 150 wild horses from the Little Fish Lake Herd Management Area (HMA). The goal was to remove around 100 horses, leaving a post-roundup population of about 100 wild horses. Fertility control was planned for all mares released back into the HMA.
From the Field
The BLM's Little Fish Lake wild horse roundup concluded on February 10. A total of 140 wild horses were removed via helicopter, with seven horses released back into the HMA. Most of the horses captured were reported to have a Henneke body condition score of 2-3.
Laura Leigh from Wild Horse Education was onsite, providing daily reports and a video highlighting the separation of a young horse from its mother, underscoring the challenges faced in these operations.
Day 2
(Report from Laura Leigh, Wild Horse Education): With 85 horses captured, the BLM met their threshold. It remains uncertain if further flights will occur. The cremello horse in the photo below persistently sought its mother, who attempted to join him in the pen, but they were tragically separated.
