Horse Lovers Challenge Army's Plan to Remove Wild Horses from Base

NEW ORLEANS - Horse lovers have taken legal action against the Army's decision to remove approximately 700 feral horses from a western Louisiana Army base and adjacent national forest areas used for training. This lawsuit highlights the horses' significant historical and cultural value to Fort Polk and raises concerns about their potential fate.
The lawsuit argues that the Army's plan could lead many horses to slaughter, as it allegedly bypasses necessary steps to facilitate their adoption by nonprofit organizations. The Army, however, maintains that the horses pose a safety risk in training zones.
The Tulane Environmental Law Clinic filed the lawsuit on behalf of the Pegasus Equine Guardian Association, an organization dedicated to safeguarding these horses, in federal court in Baton Rouge.
Earlier this month, the Humane Society of North Texas announced plans to relocate nearly 400 of these horses to Texas, providing them with a new home.
