Government Rounds Up 41 Wild Horses
The recent roundup of 41 wild horses by the U.S. government has sparked controversy and concern among animal rights advocates. Of these, 37 were sent to a Canadian slaughterhouse, while 4 young foals were rescued and are now receiving veterinary care in Colorado. This action has raised questions about the legality and ethics of such roundups.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) claims no authority over these horses under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, except for their removal. However, critics argue that the Act defines 'wild free-roaming horses and burros' as all unbranded and unclaimed horses and burros on public lands in the United States.
Jane speaks with Ginger Kathrens, the executive director of the Cloud Foundation, who observed these horses before their capture and noted they were unbranded. For more information, visit The Humane Society of the United States.
