Extending My Impact for Wild Horses: A Guest Blog by KT Merry
By KT Merry, Photographer
Growing up in Northern Nevada and working on a family-run cattle ranch on the backside of Yosemite, I had the pleasure to experience much of the West’s wildlife, including wild horses and burros.
In high school, I lived on the east side of the Carson Valley. Wild horses sauntering across the rural roads was a common sight, one that I’m sad to say is getting rarer and rarer.
In fact, I wrote my senior paper on the Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971, which is the Congressional act that protects wild, free-roaming horses and burros from capture, branding, harassment, or death; and to accomplish this, they are to be considered as an integral part of the natural system of the public lands.
So you might understand my bewilderment and anger at how the same government that passed this very act has spent the last decades spending millions on cruel, barbaric roundups of wild horses and burros, only to keep them in holding pens at the expense of taxpayers.
That’s why, when I created my Print Shop in 2016, I decided to partner with the American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign).
Their mission is to defend America’s wild horses and burros to protect their freedom, preserve their habitat, and promote humane standards of treatment. They defend and restore freedom through legislation; they promote humane management by enacting and enforcing policies that raise standards of welfare by championing humane standards.
I could never do this work on my own. By working together, I am able to donate 20% of all sales from our Simply Wild Series from the KT Merry Print Shop to the AWHC.
Choosing to partner with leading organizations that are doing the work “on the ground” has allowed me to extend my impact on the planet and for animals.
