Devils Garden Roundup Underway: A Critical Moment for Wild Horses

Devils Garden Roundup: A Turning Point for Wild HorsesDevils Garden Roundup: A Turning Point for Wild Horses

The Forest Service has commenced the roundup and removal of wild horses from California's largest wild horse herd. These horses will be taken to the BLM's Litchfield Corrals for preparation and adoption. Although legally the Forest Service could sell the horses at a slaughter auction, it has committed to returning any horses who are not adopted to the range.

Meanwhile, our legal action to challenge the Forest Service's decision to zero out the middle section of this territory, essentially turning public lands over to private ranchers, continues with upcoming oral arguments in the US Court of Appeals in Washington DC. If allowed to stand, this action would divide the Devils Garden wild horse population into two non-intermingling herds, neither of which would be genetically viable at the agency's desired "appropriate" management levels.
