Citizens Stand Up for Wild Horses in Nevada
January 27, 2017
Yesterday, January 26, 2017, was a remarkable day for wild horse advocacy in Nevada. Over 60 passionate advocates gathered at the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM's) local Resource Advisory Council (RAC) meeting in Carson City. Their mission was clear: to urge the RAC to support a community partnership with the BLM for managing wild horses in the Fish Springs area of the Pine Nut Mountains Herd Area.
The RAC unanimously supported the partnership for the third time. Although this is a positive step, it does not alter the BLM's current plans to remove 500 of the 579 wild horses from the Pine Nut Mountains, including all horses in the Fish Springs area. This meeting underscored the community's strong support for keeping these mustangs wild and free.
While the fight to stop this massive roundup is ongoing, the community has once again demonstrated that the BLM's proposed actions do not align with the desires of the local community and the American public. Despite the BLM citing numerous roadblocks to justify the removal, the agency is not obligated to remove these horses. It has the discretion to manage them humanely, protecting the range while keeping the majority of the herd wild and free.
We are incredibly proud of our local coalition partners, the Pine Nut Wild Horse Advocates (Gardnerville, Nevada) and Wild Horse Preservation League (Dayton, Nevada), who are leading the charge to save the Pine Nut wild horses. American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign) will continue to collaborate with these communities to safeguard these cherished horses.
Yesterday marked a significant victory. Although the road ahead is long, we are prepared for the challenge and hope you will join us in this vital cause.
Kudos and many thanks to all who are helping to Keep Wild Horses & Burros Wild!
