BLM to Begin Removing Wild Burros from Sinbad Management Area
April 5, 2016
The Bureau of Land Management’s Price field office is set to use a helicopter to gather and remove excess wild burros from within and outside the Sinbad Herd Management Area in east-central Utah on Monday, April 11.
The BLM aims to remove approximately 130 burros to reduce the population to the appropriate management level of 50 to 70 animals. The current population is estimated at 220 animals.
Members of the public are welcome to view the daily operations, provided the safety of the animals, staff, and observers are not jeopardized and operations are not disrupted.
The BLM will conduct escorted public tours to gather observation sites. Details will be announced daily on the BLM gather hotline at 435-636-3611. Those interested in participating should meet at the Gas-n-Go convenience store, 970 W. Main, Green River, where tours will depart at 6 a.m. Participants can also join the tour group when it stops at the Temple Mountain Road (exit 131) on I-70 at 6:30 a.m.
Participants must provide their own transportation, water, and food. The BLM recommends footwear and clothing suitable for harsh field conditions. Binoculars and four-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicles are also strongly recommended.
Animals removed from the range will be made available for adoption through the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Program.
