American Wild Horse Conservation Pledges Reward Match for Justice in Nevada Wild Horse Killings

Ely, Nevada (September 15, 2022) – Today, the American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign) announced that it will match the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) $5,000 reward fund in hopes of bringing justice to the case of the brutal killing of wild horses from Jakes Valley in November of 2021.

“The person(s) who committed these heinous acts should be brought to justice, and we thank the Bureau of Land Management for offering a reward to find those responsible,” said Holly Gann Bice, director of government relations for AWHC. “We hope that increasing this reward will help lead to an arrest and conviction for this cruelty.”

The reward seeks information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for killing five federally-protected wild horses that were fatally shot approximately two miles south of U.S. Highway 50, approximately 30 miles west of Ely, Nev. The horses – one of whom was severely wounded but still alive upon being found – were located within 600 yards of each other. An aborted fetus was attached to one of the dead mares. A necropsy revealed that the animals ranged in ages from approximately 18 months to 6 years old.

“The BLM investigates and prosecutes the killings of wild horses as part of the agency's enforcement of the Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971. Our investigation is seeking additional information from the public to identify further leads and ultimately the person(s) responsible. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact us,” said BLM Criminal Investigator Michael Mortensen.

Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to call the BLM crime hotline at 1-775-861-6550.
