Abandoned One-Month-Old Wild Horse Rescued in Corolla
Carlos, a newborn wild horse from Corolla, North Carolina, was abandoned by his mother and is now being nursed back to health on the mainland. This heartwarming rescue story highlights the dedication of volunteers working tirelessly to ensure his survival.
The Abandonment
“He kept calling for his mother, unfortunately she never came for him,” said April Hudson from the Corolla Wild Horse Fund. It is suspected that Carlos was pushed out by a stallion interested in his mother, leading to his abandonment.
The Rescue
The one-month-old foal was discovered by a volunteer lying in a street in Corolla. Rescuers guided him to a beach house to keep him safe from tourists, according to Hudson.
Current Care
Currently, Carlos remains in his stall to protect him from older horses that might bully him. He is being bottle-fed, but volunteers are working to pair him with a mare in Moyock. “She can teach him how to be a horse, ’cause the problem with bottle feeding a baby, they don’t learn how to be a horse by being taught by a human,” Hudson explained.
Looking Ahead
Within the next month, Carlos is expected to return to full health, thanks to the efforts of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund volunteers.
