MEDIA UPDATE: COLORADO AND NEVADA WILD HORSE ROUNDUP REPORT

Six Deaths Reported

(July 22, 2022) – Amid public and political backlash toward the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Wild Horse and Burro Program, two wild horse roundups are proceeding in Colorado and Nevada. Following is the latest update from the American Wild Horse Campaign (AWHC), which has observers onsite at each location.


Forest Service to Remove 500 More Devil’s Garden Wild Horses

Reno, Nev. (July 5, 2022) — Today, the American Wild Horse Campaign (AWHC) released video footage showing Bureau of Land Management (BLM) contractors fiercely throwing down a young wild horse foal during a federal capture operation in the Buffalo Hills Herd Management Area (HMA), approximately 70 miles north of Reno, Nevada.


Roundup Report: Buffalo Hills HMA, July 2022

The Buffalo Hills Herd Management Area (HMA) encompasses approximately 132,000 acres of public and private lands. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sets a population limit of just 188-314 wild horses for this area, and according to the agency, there are approximately 541 wild horses in the HMA. 


20 Roundups in 40 Years - BLM Mismanagement of the Piceance Wild Horses

(June 22, 2022) You’d be hard-pressed to find a better example of BLM mismanagement than the situation in the Piceance East Douglas Herd Management Area (HMA) in Colorado where the agency has conducted approximately 20 roundups over the past 40 years including in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2015, and 2017.

Federal officials ignore Colorado governor’s plea to stop capturing wild horses, plan Western Slope roundup this week

(June 15, 2022) Federal officials will begin capturing hundreds of mustangs roaming in far northwestern Colorado this week, dismissing a request from Gov. Jared Polis to halt roundups while the state and U.S. Bureau of Land Management find a “more humane” option for managing wild horses. 

The federal agency’s announcement of its next roundup — in the Piceance-East Douglas rangeland outside Meeker — comes after 145 wild horses died in an equine flu outbreak at a Cañon City holding facility.
