Wild Horses Saved from Slaughterhouse: A Rescue Story
GLADE PARK, Colo. Five horses have been given a second chance at life after a local horse sanctuary rescued them from certain death. Among them were a pregnant mare and a young colt.
Tracy Scott, owner of Steadfast Steeds Mustang Sanctuary in Glade Park, recently saved five horses from a Nevada slaughterhouse.
The group of horses came from two different wild mustang herds found grazing on state lands where they had no protection. The horses were captured and given a 10-day claim notice before they would be sent to the slaughter auction.
Scott and her organization were able to purchase the horses for $100 each, saving them from the slaughterhouse.
Among the five horses are a pregnant mare and a six-month-old colt, all of whom have found new homes thanks to Scott and her sanctuary.
“As a pregnant mare, she could have been sent to the slaughter auction with a baby on board, so we feel fortunate to have participated in this rescue operation,” said Scott.
The horses are currently being held in pens until repairs can be made to the fences in the area where they will live. Once repaired, they will live freely within the sanctuary as wild horses.
Steadfast Steeds needs help caring for these animals and has set up a funding website for donations at www.gofundme.com/ihgrd4. You can also call them at 970-241-0939.
