Wild Horse Group Wins Grant for Conservation Efforts

Friends of a Legacy (FOAL), a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of wild horses, recently received a $10,000 grant from the Flying V Donor Advised Fund held by the Wyoming Community Foundation. This grant will significantly aid their efforts in McCullough Peaks, Wyoming.

“We’re most grateful to the foundation for supporting our efforts to protect and preserve the wild horses of the McCullough Peaks,” FOAL president Warren Murphy said. “The funds will allow us to continue to develop a sustainable organization that champions an understanding of a matchless cultural icon and symbol of the character of Wyoming’s citizens.”

FOAL is committed to educating the public about mustangs and their habitat, enhancing the environment for all wildlife, and collaborating with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to manage the range. Since its founding in 2005, the organization has launched projects to develop water sources in the peaks and to implement a fertility control program that will help control the herd size and reduce the need for future roundups.

In addition, FOAL purchased 160 acres adjacent to the BLM range along the Greybull Highway, 26 miles east of Cody, featuring a newly installed trail with interpretive signs. Future plans include the construction of a visitor center at this location.
