Wild Horse Exhibit at Reno International Airport
Wild Horses: Spirit of the West
Thousands of people rank "seeing wild horses running free" as the top item on their bucket lists. This desire has inspired the vision of wild horse tourism as a means to preserve the West's mustangs.
Last year, when Nevada's wild horses faced the threat of slaughter sales, Bonnie Matton of the Wild Horse Conservation (formerly Wild Horse Preservation League) took action. As a former dude ranch owner, Matton understood the allure of horses, and her enthusiasm was infectious.
Kim Matthews, the marketing coordinator at Reno-Tahoe Airport, embraced the idea of showcasing wild horses at the airport. Writers, artists, and historians soon joined the effort, leading to the creation of 'Wild Horses: Spirit of the West.'
This exhibit, featuring words and art that depict Nevada's mustangs, launched DepARTures, a cultural oasis in one of the nation's busiest airports.
'Wild Horses: Spirit of the West' is on display until August.
