Wild Horse Dies in Red Rock Canyon Area
A tragic incident unfolded in the Red Rock Canyon conservation area when a wild horse died over the New Year’s holiday. The cause was a frozen pipe that cut off the water supply to a remote watering trough maintained by the Bureau of Land Management.
The holding tanks were full, but the pipe leading to the trough was clogged, possibly even frozen. The stallion was found dead just a few feet from the trough. A resident of Blue Diamond, Glen Barrett, hauled water to the site and captured images of several other horses in distress.
“And the Paint mare that was there, she was so dry that she would stick her head in the water and tip her head up, and you could see her try to guzzle the water down. She was so parched she couldn't get it down,” said Glen Barrett. “She kept working at it and finally got some down.”
The problem at the trough has now been fixed. If you spot an issue with a wild horse, you're urged to call the Bureau of Land Management to report the problem. Contact Lake Mead dispatch at 293-8998.
