Why the Senate's Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Resolution Has No Effect on Wild Horses
October 20, 2017
Last night, the U.S. Senate passed their Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Resolution, which they intend to use to help them pass tax reform in the coming months. However, this budget framework has no effect on the Fiscal Year 2018 appropriations bills that are threatening the future of wild horses and burros—this fight will continue.
The Senate must still pass a funding bill for the Interior Department, and we will continue working to ensure a provision that prohibits slaughtering wild horses and burros is included.
We anticipate a Senate hearing on the bill in the next several weeks that will be crucial to wild horses. A small but powerful lobby, who wants to use public lands for only their benefit, has been pressuring senators to allow the BLM to remove and slaughter wild horses, but we can stop them.
Our efforts will be focused on ensuring the Senate hears your voices demanding they continue to protect wild horses, and that narrow special interests don’t override the judgment of 80% of Americans that horse slaughter is unacceptable.
