Meet Nancy Kilian, a passionate and dedicated volunteer on Nevada’s Virginia Range. Nancy shares her inspiring story of how she became involved in protecting wild horses.
Discovering a New Home
When my husband John and I moved to be closer to our daughter Chelsea, we explored various areas around Reno. We were captivated by the Virginia City Highlands, especially after encountering a band of wild horses. It was then we knew this was where we wanted to live.
A Calling to Protect Wild Horses
Though I had always loved animals, I had little experience with horses. However, these wild creatures touched my soul. We eventually purchased a 10-acre property, which later expanded to 20 acres, and built our dream home. I had a dream of being involved with these wild horses, which soon became a reality.
After moving in, I was invited to help care for wild horses, including feeding and rescuing them. Despite initial fears, I bonded with them and realized this was my calling.
Leadership and Advocacy
As a member, director, and now president of the Virginia Range Wildlife Protection Association, I help fundraise and donate to wild horse rescues. We also provide fencing to ensure the safety of both wild horses and people.
Implementing Fertility Control
For years, there was talk of usingfertility controlon wild mares. I eagerly volunteered to be part of this effort. The American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign) convinced theNevada Department of Agricultureto allow us to implement this program, preventing the need for herd thinning and potential slaughter.
Training and Transformation
In August 2015, I trained in Montana with other volunteers to learn about the vaccine used forfertility control. We learned to identify horses, mix the vaccine, and use the dart gun effectively.
My life has changed dramatically from my days in Minnesota. Now, I spend my time in the mountains, identifying and darting horses forfertility control, and enjoying the beauty of the high desert.
Embracing the Wild
The experience of riding through the mountains, surrounded by nature and wild horses, is indescribable. From the vibrant wildflowers in spring to the golden hues of rabbitbrush in fall, the beauty of the landscape and its inhabitants is a constant reminder of why I do this work.
