Update on the Salt River Wild Horses: Progress and Future Plans

Salt River Wild Horses: Latest Management UpdatesSalt River Wild Horses: Latest Management Updates

November 6, 2018 - The Salt River wild horses are under a new management agreement aimed at ensuring their humane treatment and protection. The Arizona Department of Agriculture (AZDA) and the U.S. Forest Service have signed an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) to manage these iconic animals, with the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group taking a leading role.

The agreement mandates a collaborative process to develop a long-term management plan, overseen by the Udall Foundation U.S. Center for Environmental Conflict Resolution. This process will involve various stakeholders, including our president Simone Netherlands and a representative from the American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign), to advocate for the horses and the public who cherish them.

We are committed to working with government entities and interested parties over the next year to ensure the humane management of the herd. Our goal is to keep these horses wild and free, supported by public funding and dedication.

The management plan developed by this collaborative will be submitted to the Forest Service for a NEPA process evaluation. The AZDA must also approve it, ensuring compliance with the Salt River Horse Act.

The collaborative process is set to begin soon. While it is not open to the public, we will keep you updated as much as possible. Our approach is to collaborate with all stakeholders to achieve positive progress towards humane wild horse management, a model we hope to replicate across the country.

Your continued support and patience are invaluable as this process unfolds. We assure you that we will represent your interests and stand with you every step of the way.

If you'd like to contribute your input, please show your support for humane wild horse management by leaving a review on our Facebook page and giving us 5 stars.
