The Mesa Verde Wild Horses: A Call for Humane Management

Mesa Verde Wild Horses: Urgent Call for Humane SolutionsMesa Verde Wild Horses: Urgent Call for Humane Solutions

The plight of the wild horses in Mesa Verde National Park has reached a critical point. The National Park Service (NPS) has fenced off vital water sources, resulting in the tragic death of six horses due to dehydration. This dire situation calls for immediate action and humane management solutions. The American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign) and its coalition partners are actively working to address this urgent issue.

Instead of developing a humane management plan for the wild horses of the Mesa Verde National Park, the National Park Service (NPS) has fenced off the water sources in the park for these horses. Already six horses have died from dehydration, which is a horrible and painful way to die. Last year, AWHC and hundreds of citizens urged the NPS to work with humane organizations to develop a PZP fertility control program to stabilize this horse population and reduce it over time. AWHC is working with our coalition partners on this urgent situation. Please check back here for more information.

On August 14, 2014: AWHC, along with the HSUS, ASPCA, Return to Freedom, and the National Mustang Association sent a formal letter to the Director of the NPS and the Intermountain Regional Director of NPS demanding that this issue be remedied.
