Support SB90: Designate the Wild Mustang as Nevada's Official State Horse
WHAT: VOTE YES ON SB90 to designate the wild mustang as the official state horse of the State of Nevada.
- SB90 recognizes the cultural and historic significance of wild mustangs to the State of Nevada.
- Nevada is home to more than half of the U.S.’s remaining wild horses.
- 86% of Nevadans agree that wild mustangs are a defining symbol of Nevada and the American West that should be protected.
- Nevada already has a state bird, flower, and even rock, but no state horse, despite the significance of the horse to the culture and history of the state.
- The wild mustang already emblazons the Nevada State Quarter - chosen by the people of Nevada to represent the state out of 5 designs submitted to the US Mint.
- The campaign to designate wild mustangs is led by Nevada schoolchildren, mirroring the “pencil brigade” campaign that led to the passage of the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act.
- The vast majority of Nevadans believe that wild mustangs are a defining symbol of Nevada and the American West that should be protected.
- SB90 will:
- Support ecotourism and business development in Nevada by recognizing the importance of the wild mustang to the state.
- Recognize wild mustangs as a state animal of historic significance, including the Virginia Range mustangs that inspired “Wild Horse Annie” (Velma Johnston) and her successful crusade to gain federal protection for wild horses across the West.
- SB90 is supported by:
- Nevada school children
- The business community, including the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center and the Carson City Chamber of Commerce
- The American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign) and an alliance of Nevada-based community organizations.
