Spring Brings New Foals to the Virginia Range

Welcome New Foals to the Virginia RangeWelcome New Foals to the Virginia Range

As the hills and mountains turn green thanks to precipitation this winter, please join us in welcoming the new foals entering the world recently in the Virginia Range of Reno, Nevada!

It has been a cold, wet winter for pregnant mares to endure, but spring brings sunshine and some of our most treasured little ones. The snow and rain brought new plant growth on the range that wild horses depend on for food. However, after more than three years of drought, we waited for the forecasted El Niño, but sadly it did not deliver the precipitation and snowpack that the area desperately needs. Once the heat of the high desert arrives, the current forage will not last long and the wild horses will once again be competing for the remaining food and water.

We wanted to share with you some joyful photos of just a few of the beautiful Virginia Range babies born over the last month. Each week we see a couple more joining their tight-knit families. Mares are very protective of their babies, keeping them close at all times. The rest of the band also takes turns watching over the foals. We take great joy and learn much from the wonderful dynamics of the wild horse families.

Thank you for your support of the Virginia Range horses. Your donations help us work to implement the historic Virginia Range Cooperative Agreement -- a model humane management program that is keeping the Virginia Range wild horses safe and wild on the range. We wish these beautiful little ones well and look forward to watching them grow into magnificent adults who will live long lives in the wild on the range.
