Sports Car Hits Wild Horse on Assateague Island
ASSATEAGUE ISLAND, Va. – The Assateague Island National Seashore reports another incident of a wild horse being hit by a car. This unfortunate event occurred after 10 p.m. on Monday night.
The incident was reported on the Assateague Island National Seashore's Facebook page, where it was noted that a witness saw a horse being struck by a small sports car on the causeway from the bridge to the island. The sports car left the scene, and the witness called 911 to report the incident.
According to the witness, the horse fell but managed to get back up and walk away. Assateague officials believe the horse involved was N2BHS-CK, also known as Johnny's Star.
Chief Ranger Ted Morlock stated that an investigation is underway as police search for the sports car involved. The witness provided a generic description of the car, but there are no license plates available for investigators to use.
Following the incident, Assateague officials dispatched officers to the scene to search for an injured horse but did not find one. On Tuesday morning, they accounted for and assessed the health of all horses in the area, finding none appeared to be injured.
Morlock noted that there have been two other horse-vehicle collisions this year, with one resulting in an injury to a horse.
Since 1982, the Assateague Island National Seashore reports that 29 horses have been killed by cars. Officials urge drivers to reduce their speed below the posted limit when approaching horses and other wildlife on or near the road.
