Sick Wild Horse Born Along NC Coast Beats All Odds to Survive
A wild horse foal named William, born along the North Carolina coast, has made a remarkable recovery after facing life-threatening health challenges. His story has captured the hearts of many across the nation, highlighting the resilience and spirit of wild horses.
William was born on June 12th on the beaches of Corolla, but he faced numerous health complications from the start. According to Corolla Wild Horse Fund Executive Director Karen McCalpin, "When we first saw him, we thought he was exceptionally small. Every day it seemed like he was not thriving."
After being taken to the ICU at a veterinary hospital at North Carolina State University, veterinarians discovered that William was born prematurely and had a variety of health issues. Despite these challenges, William underwent surgery and was introduced to a surrogate mother, Pebbles, which marked the beginning of his recovery.
Just five days after his one-month birthday, William and Pebbles were moved to a barn in Currituck County, where Pebbles will stay with William until he is at least four months old. The community's overwhelming support helped the Corolla Wild Horse Fund raise more than $25,000 to cover William's medical expenses.
Although William will never return to the wild, he will soon find a new home in Delaware with a veterinarian. McCalpin emphasized, "If one message comes out of this, it's that these horses have an indomitable spirit and their will to live is what's kept them here for five centuries."
