Shaggy the Shimmering Buckskin on Nevada's Virginia Range
Shaggy, a wild buckskin horse with a shimmering copper coat, was born in 2012 in the Virginia Range. Known for his distinctive appearance, Shaggy's life story is intertwined with many other wild horses in Stagecoach Valley. This narrative explores his journey from a playful colt to a determined stallion leading his own band.
Early Life and Family Connections
Shaggy was born to Maxey and the legendary stallion Canyon Phantom. He grew up alongside his half-sister Saddle Shoe, enjoying the carefree days of youth. As he matured, Shaggy became a bachelor in 2014, forming a close bond with another bachelor, Flashy.
Shaggy's Determination
Shaggy's determination was evident when he fought for Bodie Braveheart's band after Bodie's sudden death. Despite losing the band to Flashy in 2016, Shaggy's resilience never waned, and he eventually formed his own family.
The Shaggy Family
Two years ago, Shaggy was spotted with a large band, including mares and foals. His family now includes Granny, Fergie, Frosted, and their offspring, all under Shaggy's watchful eye.
Granny's Story
Granny, one of Shaggy's mares, was first seen during a winter storm a decade ago. She reappeared in Shaggy's band in 2019, bringing with her a colt named Dublin.
Offspring: Buckley and Jamille
Shaggy's mare Frosted gave birth to Buckley, a handsome buckskin colt, followed by Jamille, a sweet filly born to Fergie. These young ones remind us of Shaggy's playful past with Saddle Shoe.
Sissy and Her Fillies
Sissy's filly Sunflower was born alongside Sutro and Krista. Although Apache, another stallion, later took Sissy and Sunflower, they remain close to Shaggy's band.
Winter with Shaggy's Band
During winter, Shaggy leads his family to sheltered areas in the Virginia Range, showcasing his protective nature and strategic thinking.
Shaggy's Temperament
Known for his calm demeanor, Shaggy avoids unnecessary conflicts but is fiercely protective of his family when needed. His strategic avoidance of confrontation has allowed him to thrive in Stagecoach Valley for over a decade.
The Shaggy Parade
Recently, while documenting Shaggy's band, two members, Sutro and Krista, were missing. Krista was later found, but Sutro remains with another stallion, highlighting the dynamic and ever-changing nature of wild horse bands.
