Pioneer of PZP Birth Control in Wild Horses Dies at 75
Dr. Jay Kirkpatrick, a renowned pioneer in the field of fertility control for wild horses, bison, and urban deer, has passed away at the age of 75. His groundbreaking work with the porcine zona pellucida (PZP) vaccine has left a lasting impact on wildlife management.
Dr. Kirkpatrick died on December 16 after a brief but serious illness. He was a leading figure in the use of PZP, a birth control vaccine, to manage wild animal populations humanely.
As the founder and director of the Science and Conservation Center in Billings, Montana, Dr. Kirkpatrick dedicated his career to producing PZP on a not-for-profit basis for global use. The center also trains volunteers in the administration of PZP, ensuring the continuation of his legacy.
