NDA Signs Agreement for Fertility Control of Virginia Range Horses
April 9, 2019
The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) and the American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign) have signed a non-exclusive agreement to manage fertility control for the Virginia Range feral/estray horse population. This initiative aims to maintain ecological balance and enhance public safety.
The agreement allows for additional cooperative efforts, with the NDA committed to addressing public safety concerns as needed. For inquiries, the NDA can be contacted at (775) 353-3709.
The Virginia Range area spans from US-395 to Highway 95A, and I-80 to Highway 50, covering a significant region that requires careful management.
Certified darters from the American Wild Horse Conservation will begin administering the PZP immunocontraceptive vaccine to wild horses in Innovation Park, Storey County, this week. This effort is part of a broader strategy to manage the horse population humanely.
As Nevada is a "fence out" state, landowners who wish to keep livestock off their property must construct legal fences in compliance with state law (NRS Chapter 569.431). The NDA emphasizes the importance of drivers being vigilant for horses crossing roads in search of food and water, urging adherence to traffic laws and speed limits.
