NDA and AWHC Collaborate on Virginia Range Horse Fertility Control
April 9, 2019
The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) and the American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign) have signed a non-exclusive agreement to implement fertility control measures for the Virginia Range feral/estray horse population. This initiative marks a significant step towards comprehensive management of these horses.
“We understand the importance of fertility control in the long-term health and management of the Virginia Range horses,” NDA Director Jennifer Ott stated. “I look forward to working with the staff and volunteers of AWHC and our shared goal of a sustainable, long-term solution for managing the Virginia Range horses.”
The new agreement focuses on fertility control while allowing for additional cooperative agreements in the future. NDA staff will continue to address public safety concerns as needed. Horses on highways or roadways should be reported to local law enforcement or by calling NDA’s Animal Industry division at 775-353-3709.
The Virginia Range area spans from highway 395 to 95A and I-80 to Highway 50. As Nevada is a “fence-out” state, landowners must construct legal fences if they wish to keep livestock off their property, according to NRS Chapter 569.431. Horses in the Virginia Range often cross roadways in search of food and water. Drivers should remain vigilant and adhere to all traffic laws, including posted speed limits in this area.
The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) promotes a business climate that is fair, economically viable, and encourages a sustainable environment that serves to protect food, fiber, and human health and safety through effective service and education. The NDA includes the divisions of Administration, Animal Industry, Consumer Equitability, Food and Nutrition, and Plant Industry.
