National Park Agrees to Transfer Wild Horses to Private Owners
Theodore Roosevelt National Park, in collaboration with the North Dakota Badlands Horse Registry, has initiated a plan to transfer excess wild horses from the park's south unit to private owners. This move aims to address concerns about overgrazing and resource damage within the park.
The national park maintains these horses as historic demonstration herds for visitors. However, the National Park Service must manage the population to prevent environmental impacts. Traditionally, the park conducted large-scale roundups using helicopters every four or five years, with excess horses sold through sale barns.
Given the expense and labor involved in roundups, the park service believes this new arrangement will streamline the process, allowing horses to be transferred directly to private owners.
