Key House Committee Removes Horse Slaughter from the Agenda

House Committee Blocks Horse SlaughterHouse Committee Blocks Horse Slaughter

Today marks a significant victory for animal protection advocates as the U.S. House Appropriations Committee voted to pass an amendment preventing horse slaughter for human consumption. This amendment, led by Reps. Sam Farr and Charlie Dent, aims to keep horse slaughter plants closed and protect American tax dollars from being used for this inhumane practice.

The amendment passed by a narrow margin of 25 to 23, contrasting last year's tie vote of 24 to 24. This decision strengthens efforts to keep horse slaughter plants shuttered and aligns with the Senate Appropriations Committee's previous voice vote approval.

The horse slaughter industry is criticized for being predatory and inhumane, targeting young and healthy horses rather than euthanizing old ones. These horses are often purchased under false pretenses by 'killer buyers' and sold for meat in Europe and Japan. The American public does not consume horse meat, and resources should focus on protecting the U.S. food supply.

We extend our gratitude to Reps. Farr and Dent for their leadership in this bipartisan effort, and to all 25 committee members who voted in favor of the amendment. If your representative serves on the committee, you can see how they voted below:
