Horse Slaughter Bill Vote in Ottawa Next Week
Alex Atamanenko’s horse slaughter bill is set for a vote next week in the House of Commons. This significant legislation aims to enhance safety standards for horses in the food chain, aligning them with those required for other animals intended for human consumption in Canada.
The New Democrat MPP was joined by U.S. State Senator Joseph Abruzzo and Victoria McCullough, owner of Chesapeake Petroleum, at a news conference supporting the bill. Atamanenko describes Abruzzo and McCullough as pivotal in the U.S. Congress’ recent decision to keep American slaughterhouses closed to horses.
McCullough emphasized that horses coming to Canada from the U.S. are not part of a farm-to-table system. She highlighted the significant risks to human health under the current system, which cannot be understated.
The New Democrat MP pointed out that a long list of toxic drugs is commonly administered to most Canadian and U.S. horses throughout their lives. These drugs are not approved for use in food animals, raising concerns about their presence in the food chain.
Atamanenko's bill seeks to ensure that the same safety standards and accountability required for all animals intended for the human food chain in Canada are applied to horses.
