Advocates for the Virginia Range horses are organizing a candlelight vigil this Saturday in front of the state Capitol in Carson City. This event is a crucial effort to persuade Gov. Brian Sandoval to prevent the Agriculture Department's plan to transfer ownership of these horses to a private nonprofit. Concerns have been raised by Louise Martin of the American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign) about the potential involvement of Protect the Harvest, a group feared to sell the horses for slaughter.

The Virginia Range horses are not protected under federal law as they are classified as feral or estray, rather than free-roaming wild horses. Approximately 3,000 of these horses inhabit the Virginia Range, spanning from south Reno through the Virginia City area to just north of Carson City.

The vigil is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. and aims to gather support and raise awareness about the plight of these horses.
