Harrowing Rescue on the Virginia Range
Last month, a dramatic rescue unfolded on Nevada State Route 341, where seven wild horses found themselves trapped on a narrow ledge. The Least Resistance Training Concepts's Technical Large Animal Rescue Team, in collaboration with Wild Horse Connection, undertook the challenging mission to save these majestic creatures.
Rescue Operation on a Dangerous Highway
The rescue operation was initiated when the team received an urgent request to assist the horses caught between a ravine and a guardrail. This section of the highway, notorious for its blind curves and lack of a shoulder, posed significant risks to both the rescue team and the horses.
The horses had ventured alongside the guardrail, only to find the path narrowing dangerously. Realizing they were trapped, the family of horses had no option to move forward or retreat.
Coordinated Efforts for a Safe Rescue
The LRTC team, equipped with their Incident Support Unit retrofitted with a grant from the American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign), arrived to manage the situation. The vehicle, once an ambulance, was instrumental in controlling traffic with the help of a Nevada Highway Patrol officer.
Approaching the horses quietly, the team observed their behavior to devise a safe rescue plan. Although the horses were wary of humans, they remained relatively calm, allowing the team to assess the situation carefully.
Guiding the Horses to Safety
While some horses attempted to navigate the steep slope, others hesitated, especially the foals. The team applied gentle pressure, encouraging all the horses to descend safely. Eventually, all the horses managed to reach the level ground below, away from the perilous ledge.
As the rescue concluded, the horses were seen nibbling on vegetation, making their way back down the hillside.
Celebrating Teamwork and Success
The American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign) is proud to collaborate with dedicated groups like Least Resistance Training Concepts. Together, they continue to protect and preserve the Virginia Range wild horses. This successful rescue is a testament to the power of teamwork and shared goals.
