Founder of Mustang Rescue, Mona Jerome, Passes Away at 83

Mona Jerome, a passionate advocate formustangs, dedicated nearly two decades to the nonprofit mustang rescue she founded in Biddeford. Her tireless efforts to care for and find homes for these majestic animals have left a lasting impact on the community and beyond. Jerome's work continues to inspire many, even after her passing at the age of 83.

For almost 20 years, Jerome could be found at the mustang rescue, speaking to volunteers and visitors about the plight ofmustangsin America. She cared for these horses until they were either adopted or lived out their lives at the rescue.

Diagnosed with lung cancer in July, Jerome passed away at her daughter's home on January 21. Her passion formustangswas infectious, and she was a true pioneer in advocating for their rescue. The American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign) recognized her efforts on social media, highlighting her dedication to the cause.

Jerome established the rescue center as a sanctuary for unwanted, neglected, and abusedmustangs. The U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management captures wild horses to prevent overpopulation, and some of these horses find their way to the Biddeford center when adopters underestimate the care required.

Her love for wildmustangsbegan in 1980 when she and her husband purchased Bush Brook Farm for a 6-year-old mustang. Her passion led to the founding of Ever After Mustang Rescue in 2002, after years ofvolunteeringand learning about wild horses.

Jerome retired from the rescue in 2021, but her influence remains strong. Volunteers at the center continue to care for the horses, inspired by her compassion and dedication. Her programs, such as those for boosting women's self-esteem, have had a significant impact.

Jerome's legacy includes hostingeventsto raise awareness aboutmustangs, such asMustangsin Motion and community clinics. Her efforts to educate the public extended to organizing a horse parade for the ASPCA's Help a Horse Day in 2015.

Despite her passing, the rescue continues its mission, relying on donations to support its work. Those wishing to honor Jerome's memory can donate to the Ever After Mustang Rescue. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the family farm in Biddeford this summer.
