Darts Used to Manage Wild Horse Populations in Western Colorado
In Western Colorado, an innovative approach is being used to manage the wild horse populations. The Little Bookcliffs Wild Horse Area Darting Team employs darts to administer contraceptives to mares, effectively controlling herd sizes.
The team has been recognized by the Bureau of Land Management for their efforts. Over the past 13 years, they have successfully injected 325 doses of fertility drugs, resulting in smaller and more manageable herds.
According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, this method has proven effective in maintaining the balance of wild horse populations in the area.
