Citizens Stand Up for Wild Horses in Nevada

Nevada Citizens Rally for Wild HorsesNevada Citizens Rally for Wild Horses

January 27, 2017

Yesterday, January 26, 2017, was a remarkable day for wild horse advocacy in Nevada. Over 60-70 wild horse advocates from northern Nevada gathered at the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM's) local Resource Advisory Council (RAC) meeting in Carson City. Their mission was to urge the RAC to support the local community partnership with the BLM to manage wild horses living in the Fish Springs area of the Pine Nut Mountains Herd Area.

The RAC unanimously supported the partnership for the third time. While this is a positive step, it does not alter the BLM's current plans to remove 500 of the 579 wild horses living in and around the Pine Nut Mountains, including all the wild horses in the Fish Springs area. This meeting underscored the strong community support for keeping these mustangs wild and free.

Although the fight to stop this massive roundup is ongoing, we have once again demonstrated that the BLM's proposed action disregards the wishes of the local community and the American public. The BLM cited numerous roadblocks to justify removing the horses. However, the agency is not obligated to remove these horses and has the discretion to humanely manage them in a way that protects the range while keeping the majority of the herd wild and free.

We are immensely proud of our local coalition partners, the Pine Nut Wild Horse Advocates (Gardnerville, Nevada) and Wild Horse Preservation League (Dayton, Nevada), who are leading the fight to save the Pine Nut wild horses. American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign) will continue to collaborate with these local communities to do what is necessary to protect these beloved horses.

Yesterday was a great day. While we have a long fight ahead, we are up for the challenge and hope you will join us.

Kudos and many thanks to all who are helping to Keep Wild Horses & Burros Wild!
