Bureau of Land Management Sued Over Wild Horse Removal Plans
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is facing a lawsuit from wild horse advocates over a controversial plan to remove wild horses from rural Nevada. The plaintiffs, including Western Watersheds Project, American Wild Horse Conservation (formerly American Wild Horse Campaign), The Cloud Foundation, and landowner Laura Cunningham, argue that the plan violates federal law.
The lawsuit challenges the BLM's decision to remove 1,700 horses from the Caliente Herd Area Complex, a 700,000-acre region. The plaintiffs assert that the BLM failed to comply with legal requirements to assess environmental impacts and consider alternative solutions, such as reducing livestock grazing on public lands.
The complaint highlights a breach of The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971, which aims to protect wild horse populations. The groups are seeking a judicial order to prevent the BLM from proceeding with the horse removal.
