Bureau of Land Management Plan Threatens Sinbad Wild Burros
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) recently released an Environmental Assessment and “Gather Plan” that will result in hundreds of federally protected wild burros losing their freedom, homes, and families. The BLM plans to take the population from an estimated 328 to just 60 individuals on over 99-thousand acres of public lands in Utah. The sad truth is that the agency has even less understanding of wild burro population growth than it does about that of wild horses. Thus it is entirely misguided for the agency to proceed with this action when so little is known about the true population growth rate of the herd. Without this information, the BLM risks severely harming the health of the remaining burros and the future of this federally protected herd.
Worse still, the BLM continues to inadequately analyze the best available science on how wild burros actually benefit their environment. BLM must consider how this action, such a severe reduction in the wild burro population, will impact the environment before proceeding with any action in the HMA.
