Salt Lake City—The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is offering a public tour of the Axtell Contract Off-Range Corrals in Axtell, Utah, on Monday, Dec. 14, 2015. This facility provides care to wild horses and burros removed from the range.

This is the first public tour since the facility opened in June 2015. The tour will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mountain Standard Time. Attendees can observe approximately 650 wild horses, including those from the September 2015 Wheeler Pass Herd Management Area emergency gather near Cold Creek, Nevada. A general discussion about the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program will also be held.

The facility is located at 13500 South 10490 West (mile marker 235.2 on Highway 89) in Axtell, Utah, approximately six miles south of Gunnison or eight miles north of Salina. Note that some map applications may not recognize this address.

The facility can care for up to 1,000 wild horses and covers 32 acres with over 40 holding pens. Horses receive tailored feed, fresh water, and mineral supplements daily. A veterinarian routinely inspects the horses and provides medical care as needed.

The BLM aims to place horses into private homes. Horses at the Axtell Corrals are available for adoption or sale through the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro internet adoption site, off-site events, and the BLM’s adoption or sales program. While horses won't be available for adoption during the tour, interested parties can arrange adoptions through the Delta Wild Horse and Burro Facility by calling 435-864-4068.

The BLM manages over 245 million acres of public land, primarily in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate nationwide. Its mission is to manage and conserve public lands for present and future generations under a mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield. In fiscal year 2014, the BLM generated $5.2 billion in receipts from public lands.
