BLM Offers Public Tour of Fallon, NV Feedlot
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is offering two public tours of the Indian Lakes Off-Range Wild Horse and Burro Corral in Fallon, Nevada, on Oct. 23. This facility is crucial for the care of wild horses and burros removed from the range, including those recently gathered from the McGee Mountain herd management area in northwestern Nevada.
The public tours are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., each lasting about two hours. Each tour will accommodate up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. To attend, the public can sign up and get driving directions by calling BLM at 775/475-2222.
Located about a 90-minute drive east of Reno, the Indian Lakes Off-Range Corral is at 5676 Indian Lakes Road and is privately owned and operated. Tour attendees will be taken around the facility as a group on a wagon to learn about the facility, the animals, and BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Program.
The Indian Lakes facility can care for up to 3,200 wild horses or burros. It encompasses 320 acres with 43 large holding pens, each measuring 70,000 square feet, safely holding about 100 horses. The horses receive feed tailored to their needs daily, along with a constant supply of fresh water through automatic watering troughs. Free choice mineral block supplements are also provided in each pen. A veterinarian routinely inspects the horses and provides necessary medical care.
The BLM strives to place horses removed from the range into good, private homes. Horses at the Indian Lakes facility are available for adoption or sale throughout the year at off-site adoption events and through BLM’s Adoption or Sales Program. For more information, visit on.doi.gov/1Lkz8DD.
